Hyperspectral Image Understanding
The light you see is actually reflected by the object being viewed. When you look at a red apple, the apple skin actually absorbs all light around it and reflects only a portion of the light, in this case in the red spectrum, if you see the apple red color. The white color is visible when all the light that shines on an object is reflected, and a black object reflects very little light. The range of light reflected from an object is called its spectrum. center wavelength spectrum around a red apple red so do not look green, for example.
Physicists long ago, including items that are made of different molecules reflect light differently. Something red is made from things that are different from other object that is black. Physicists have developed tables that relate the color of light reflected in the composition of an object. Why bother with a doctor to determine what something is made based only on the light reflecting?
Although you can take an apple and understand what is fact, you can not do the same with something that is much larger and farther. When it comes to things that are too big, too far or too fast to capture and analyze, physicists can see the light reflecting in order to obtain a very good idea of its composition. A good example is a star like our sun. We know that the Sun is composed of two main elements – hydrogen and helium. We sent someone to the Sun to take a sample, because the sun is too hot to get close enough to get a sample of its surface. We learned about the composition of the sun while watching the light it emits.
